The Christian movement to Burma
For many centuries, Burma was a Buddhist country. Buddhism is a religion that started in India by the Buddha. He was a real man named Gautama who was a prince. His father never let him out of the palace because he did not want him to see the outside world. As an adult he saw four visions that showed him old age, sickness, death, and at last peace. The peace was shown as a monk. Gautama did not understand the vision and his slave told him about each thing he saw. When he finally saw the monk, he understood that he had to find the peace. He began to minister to people and preach about peace. Many people followed him and later the religion spread to other Asian countries including Burma. They believe that life is full of suffering caused by desire and that the way to stop this is through enlightenment. (History of Buddha, Wikipedia.org)
Buddha is just a man who wanted to find peace, but the Jesus is the one who can really save people’s life. In the late eighteenth century a Christian man named Adoniram Judson traveled to Burma to try to share Jesus with the people. His mission was to help the Burmese, Karen, Kachin, and other ethnic groups of Burma accept Jesus and Christianity. At this time, all
of these people were Buddhist. He wanted the people to stop believing in Buddha and give their hearts to the Christian God. He is the man responsible for bringing missionaries to Burma and converting many Burmese to Christianity. At his death, over eight thousand souls in Burma had been saved and converted to Christianity. Today, Christianity is the second largest religion among Burmese people and it is because of his work that one third of the people have accepted Jesus Christ (Wiki Burma).
Adoniram Judson said, "The prospects are bright as the promises of God." (wholesomewords.org). Judson was the first Baptist missionary to go to Burma. Judson was the son of an American Congregational minister. Congregationalism originally came from the Reformation in England. Congregational churches are usually very independent. The Congregationalists eventually became the Baptists in England and the United States (religion 1). Adoniram Judson was born on August 9, 1788 in Malden, Massachusetts. He was very intelligent and brilliant boy. He learned to read when he was three years old. As a child, he was very interested in the Bible. His dad read much of it to him and he learned a lot about Jesus (wikipedia.org).
Even though he knew a lot about Jesus, he didn't become a Christian until he was twenty. Later, he went to college in Rhode Island. The school is now known as Brown University. He went to college when he was sixteen and graduated when he was nineteen (wikipedia.org). While in college he became a deist because of his friend. He forgot all about Jesus and the things that his father had taught him. Deists are freethinkers who believe in nature and morality (dictionary). Later, Judson's friend died suddenly and it made him believe in God again. In 1808, Judson “made a solemn dedication of himself to God” (wikipedia.org).
In 1810, Judson worked with a group of people that called themselves “The Brethren” who started a missionary society (wikipedia.org). Because of this group, he wanted to go to Asia for a mission. The Congregational Church agreed to help him go to Asia. Before he went on his journey, he got married to a woman named Ann. His wife went with him because she wanted to be a missionary too. At first he was heading to India. He wanted to go there because there were so many Buddhist in that country. On his way to India, a cyclone caused the ship to land in Burma. The situation made him think that Jesus wanted him to do his missionary work there (believersweb.org).
He got to Burma on July 13, 1813. Then he started talking about Jesus to the people. At first, they hated him and wanted him to go away. Judson knew so many different languages like Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, and then he began to learn the Burmese language. He found a teacher and worked twelve hours everyday. It took him three years to learn to speak the language. His wife also learned to speak Burmese. Judson spoke Burmese as well as the native people (preceptaustin.org).
While on the mission field in Burma, he had a hard time making people believe in God. People stayed away from him because they knew he was not a Buddhist. He wanted to communicate with the people so he decided to build a Burmese Zayat. A Zayat is a customary bamboo and thatch shelter that is used for travelers to rest. In 1819, fifteen men were resting at the Zayat and Judson preached about Jesus. Two months later, a man named Maung Naw who was thirty-five years old was baptized and became a Christian. The first man that he baptized was Burmese and the second man was Karen. The Karen are one of the many ethnic groups in Burma. The Karen's man’s name was Ko Tha Byu and he was a very bad man. He murdered at least thirty men, but repented and God gave him forgiveness. During this time of great success, Judson's baby son died. This was the second child that he and his wife lost since they married and started on the mission. (Wikipedia.org)
In 1820, The Burmese king Bagyidaw did not like Judson preaching and teaching in Burma. He did not like the Burmese people changing their religion. Judson was put in and out of jail many times. While he was in jail, his wife would visit him as well as making trips to see the king and paying money for him to be freed from jail. Judson could not take a Bible to jail, so Ann secretly hid a Bible in a pillow for him. He finished translating the Gospel of Matthew from English to Burmese while he was in jail (preceptaustin.org). Unfortunately when he returned from jail he found his wife and new child very sick from smallpox. She had been sick for twenty-one months and had delivered a child while her husband was in prison. Both Ann and her baby girl died later after Judson was freed from jail. Ann was an amazing woman. She encourages Judson all the time and always gave him a positive manner. Ann also helped Judson make an English to Burmese dictionary. She was a good helper for Judson. Even though he lost his wife and child, he did not give up on the people of Burma and his mission.
In 1824, the war happened between United Kingdom and Burma. Judson had been arrested again for seventeen months. When he was in jail he had to be the translator for Britain because he knew how to speak Burmese. The British liked using his translation skills a lot. Twelve months later, Judson and another missionary were set free again. (Wikipedia.org)
Nine years later in 1835, Judson married Sarah Hall Boardman who was the widow of another missionary. He and Sarah continued to grow their mission in Burma. They built a church for the Burmese people to worship. Many people were becoming Christian instead of Buddhist. He and Sarah had eight children; five of them survived to be grown-up. Around 1845, Sarah’s physical health was failing so she and Judson returned to America. When she got to America, she died. Right after Sarah’s death, Judson commissioned Emily Chubbuck to write her life story. A year later, on June 2, 1846, Judson married Emily. This was his third marriage. He had one daughter with Emily. While in America, Judson was asked to speak many times and was praised by many people for his work. He eventually returned to Burma to complete his work, but sadly only lived three more years (Wikipedia.org).
In 1850, Judson got very sick and it was decided that he needed to take a long sea voyage to get well. He was put on a ship on April 3 in the Burmese city of Moulmein. Many of the people of Burma were crying as he was put on the ship. On April 12, he died at sea. Many of Judson’s biological children did not see him past their childhood. When he died he also left almost eight thousand children of God in Burma as well. (preceptaustin.org)
Whenever Judson had a hard time breathing because of stress or tiredness, he would always pray to God “Lord, let me finish my work. Spare me long enough to put Thy saving Word into the hands of a perishing people.” (wholesomewords.org) Judson got the energy from God and always asked him for help. Judson was not tired of God, but he was tired of the people who did not know about Jesus. He always prayed for the people who did not know Jesus.
Adoniram Judson is an amazing man that we cannot forget. He was a great missionary for God and a great servant to the people of Burma. He translated the English Bible into the Burmese language and made Burmese Bibles available to all people. He wanted the people of Burma to read the Bible so he learned the Burmese language in three years. He baptized a lot of the ethnic people of Burma. One third of the people became Christians in Burma because of his mission. When his life sadly ended at sea, he said, "I am not tired of my work, neither am I tired of the world; yet, when Christ calls me home, I shall go with gladness." (wholesomewords.org) He died when his age was sixty-one years. He lived a full life and was in the service for God for over thirty seven years. (preceptaustin.org)
The missionary movement in Burma was so that many of the Burmese people would believe Jesus. After Judson died he left the translated Bible, one hundred churches, and eight thousand believers. We can see so many churches in every city and state in Burma because of Judson’s hard work for the Burmese people. Now over half of the people of Burma have become Christian. All of the Baptist churches celebrate “Judson Day” during every July. In 1920 they were having a celebration at Yangon College and University to honor Judson’s work. This school had been renamed to Yangon University later. Also Judson completed the first Burmese and English Dictionary. It is still used by the people of Burma. Judson work still goes on many years after his death. (Wikipedia.org)
Judson was a generous man because he saved so many people’s souls. I do not think that the people of Burma will know Jesus without him. He gives all of his life to the people of Burma. Because of him, now Burma has a lot of Christians and many people believed in Jesus. Judson’s mission impacted Burma so much. Judson is a hero to Burma.

The Red Pyramid
The story is about a brother and sister named Carter and Sadie Kane and their father, Julius Kane, who is an Egyptologiest. He was a secretive man and he never told his children what he was doing. Carter and his father were going to see their sister Sadie in London. She lived with her grandparents after her mother died. When the father and Carter were in England, something happened on Christmas Eve. They were going to the British Museum. They went inside to the Egyptian wing to see the Rosetta Stone. Suddenly, their father wrote something on the stone and the stone exploded and their dad disappeared. The kids had to find their dad! The search made them go on a long journey. On this journey the kids find out they have magical powers. These powers help them on the search.
“She didn't give us much time to talk about it. She ordered me to the library to grab my dad's magic kit, and when I came back she was arguing with Sadie about Khufu and Philip”. Carter said this about Bast. This shows that Bast is protector. Bast knows they need to use the magic to solve what has happened to their father. Bast also wants to hurry because they have to find their father before the enemy kills them.
The main characters in this story are Sadie and Carter. Sadie is the younger child and she is very smart. She didn't live with her father, but she knows Egyptian hieroglyphics more than Carter. Carter is the oldest child and he also smart. Carter lived with his father, but he didn't know Egyptian hieroglyphics as much as Sadie. Both kids don't like each other very much, but they fin work together to try and find their dad.
The story starts in London, but the long journey continues throughout Europe and North America. The story happens in modern times and the action began on Christmas Eve. The genre of “The Red Pyramid” is fiction and fantasy. The book fits in a larger context with historical, such as Egyptian culture, archeology and hieroglyphics.
The author used many details in the story. The characters were interesting and complicated, but he explained them well. He used gods and goddesses to made the story interesting, described the places very well, and had a lot of action happening in the story. He made the reader eager to know what was going to happen next.
The main problem in this story was their dad was missing. There are other problems. First, the kids don't know who they are and they don't know how to use their magic. Second, Sadie doesn't know her dad really well. The theme or lesson in the story is for the kids to find their magic. The magic is their gift. Maybe the author wants the reader to find out their gift.

I believe that others would like to read this book if they are interested in magic, adventure and a mystery. Also, if they like history, ancient Egypt and gods and goddesses, they would love this book.

“The Red Pyramid” reminds me of “ Harry Potter” because they are both similar. They both have much magic and their parents are magicians. Carter and Sadie and Harry Potter do not realize they have magical powers and they have to discover how to get them. Also, there is good and evil fighting each other and most often, the good wins in the end. The stories are also different. In the “Harry Potter” books, they didn't have gods and goddesses like “The Red Pyramid” had. Harry has two best friends that help him, and Carter and Sadie have a good friend that is a magician cat, Bast. Also, Harry is trying to find out about his parents and Carter and Sadie are looking for their dad.

C.S. Lewis and Rick Riordan have different styles of writing. In “The Red Pyramid” Riordan's characters, Carter and Sadie talk back forth, just like they're talking to the readers. In “The lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” C. S. Lewis writes the story like a narrator and he talks about the story.

Riordan's style of writing has a lot of Greek Mythology and hieroglyphics that are true and not invented. He has great humor too. When the brother and sister are talking, it's like they are arguing, but it's funny. He writes great adventures that makes the readers think and use their imaginations.

When I was reading the book, I was a little worried that I wouldn't understand all the words. But when I started, the story was so good, I wanted to keep reading. I liked the long journey of when they were learning about their magical powers. It was fun to read how they could open doors or change from a human to a bird with a magic word.
